SHW Nature Splitting Axe - 4lbs with 27.5" handle
SHW Nature Splitting Axe - 4lbs with 27.5" handle
The SHW Nature Splitting Axe is a substantial but relatively compact axe for preparing firewood. Its flared splitting profile penetrates the end grain and then forces the wood apart as the head widens, making it better suited to splitting rounds than the thinner profile of a general-purpose or felling axe.
A 4-pound forged steel head supplies plenty of momentum, while the approximately 28-inch handle provides good control and is easier to manage than a full-length splitting axe. This combination works particularly well for ordinary stove-length firewood and medium-sized rounds on a chopping block. At 5.3 pounds overall, it still has enough weight to do much of the work once the swing is underway.
The head is left with a traditional, natural forged finish and hardened to 52–55 HRC for durability and edge retention. The slightly curved ash handle is oiled rather than varnished, providing a comfortable grip while helping to reduce the shock and vibration of repeated splitting.
